MACAU – CHINA: According to the Minister of Energy and Water, Angola is in harmony with worldwide efforts towards sustainable development.

During the closing ceremony of the 15th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) in Macau, China, Angola’s Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, affirmed that the country is advancing in its electricity supply efforts, placing greater focus on renewable energy, though significant obstacles remain.

In his participation at the forum, which revolved around the theme “Green Innovation – Digital Connectivity,” Minister Borges delivered a speech on the Energy Transition, underlining the importance of adopting new energy sources, strategies, and missions to foster high-quality productive growth.

Borges noted that Angola recognizes climate change as one of the most critical global challenges, impacting both the economic and social fabric of nations. The country has adopted the National Climate Change Strategy 2021-2035, which is aimed at fulfilling the objectives of the Paris Agreement and aligning with development agendas such as the Africa Agenda 2063 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The minister emphasized Angola’s dedication to cutting carbon intensity in electricity production by 2025, in addition to initiatives focused on sustainable forest management, transport, and agriculture. He also referenced climate resilience projects designed to protect communities and ensure economic and social investments. At present, 64% of Angola’s energy mix comes from clean energy sources.

The Energy Sector Action Plan for 2023-2027, aligned with Agenda 2050, aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources to 72% by 2027, with a special emphasis on expanding solar power and boosting electrification rates to 50%. This will require an estimated $12 billion investment, with vital contributions from the private sector and financial institutions.

Minister Borges also highlighted the completion of several key projects, including solar power plants in Biópio, Luena, Baía Farta, and Saurimo, which are expected to be operational by 2024, alongside other projects currently under construction. He underscored the significance of Angola’s partnership with China, a global leader in energy transition through solar investments and electromobility, which could bring investment and funding opportunities to Angola.

The event was attended by Angolan dignitaries, including the Consul General of Angola in Macau and senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and Water.
