Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Amy Dowden has always been known for her incredible talent and infectious energy on the dance floor. But behind the glitz and glamour, she has been fighting a tough battle with cancer.
In a recent interview, the 30-year-old dancer opened up about her experience with the disease, revealing that she hit an “all time low” after completing her treatment. Dowden was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition, at the age of 19. However, in 2019, she received the devastating news that she also had thyroid cancer.
The news came as a shock to Dowden, who had always been a picture of health and fitness. She underwent surgery to remove her thyroid gland and then had to undergo radioactive iodine treatment. This meant that she had to isolate herself for two weeks, away from her family and friends.
“It was a really tough time for me,” Dowden shared. “I had just finished my treatment and I was feeling physically and emotionally drained. I hit an all time low and I didn’t know how to pick myself back up.”
But with the support of her family, friends, and her dance partner, Karim Zeroual, Dowden found the strength to keep going. She returned to the dance floor for the 2019 season of Strictly Come Dancing and wowed audiences with her incredible performances.
“I am so grateful for the love and support I received from everyone during that time,” Dowden said. “It was a difficult journey, but I am so glad that I had the opportunity to dance again and do what I love.”
Dowden’s story is a reminder that cancer does not discriminate and can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. But it is also a testament to the power of positivity and the importance of a strong support system.
“I want to use my platform to raise awareness about cancer and encourage others to never give up,” Dowden shared. “I am proof that with determination and a positive mindset, anything is possible.”
Dowden’s battle with cancer has also inspired her to give back to the community. She has become an ambassador for the charity Bowel Cancer UK, using her platform to raise awareness and funds for the cause.
“I am determined to use my experience to help others,” Dowden said. “I want to spread the message that early detection is key and encourage people to get regular check-ups.”
Her positive attitude and determination have not gone unnoticed, with fans and fellow dancers praising her for her strength and resilience. Dowden’s story serves as a reminder that no matter what challenges we face, we can overcome them with the right mindset and support.
As she continues to shine on the dance floor, Dowden hopes to inspire others to never give up on their dreams, no matter what obstacles they may face.
“I am grateful for every day and every opportunity to dance,” Dowden said. “I want to use my story to motivate others and show them that anything is possible if you believe in yourself.”
