Cardiff author reveals inspiration for debut fantasy book — from St Fagan’s to Splott

Welsh author, Megan Richards, has captivated readers with her debut fantasy novel, “Echoes of the Kingdom”. The book has enchanted audiences with its vivid world-building and compelling characters. However, what many may not know is that Richards drew inspiration from her own surroundings in Wales.

Growing up in Wales, Richards has always been fascinated by the rich history and breathtaking landscapes of her homeland. It’s no surprise then, that she chose to set her novel in a fictional kingdom that is inspired by the stunning Welsh countryside and its ancient tales.

In an exclusive interview, Richards shared some of the places that inspired her to create the fantastical world of her novel. “Wales is a land steeped in magic and mystery. From the rugged mountains to the lush green valleys, there is no shortage of inspiration here,” she said. “I wanted to incorporate the beauty and mystique of my home into my writing.”

One of the places that served as a major inspiration for the author is the Snowdonia National Park. Located in North Wales, Snowdonia is a nature lover’s paradise with its majestic peaks and cascading waterfalls. Richards recalls spending countless afternoons hiking through the park with her family, each time discovering new hidden gems that sparked her imagination. “The rugged landscape was the perfect setting for my characters’ journey through the kingdom,” she shared.

Another location that played a significant role in shaping the world of “Echoes of the Kingdom” is the ancient Caernarfon Castle. This medieval fortress, situated on the banks of the River Seiont, has a rich history and a hauntingly beautiful presence. Richards incorporated elements of the castle’s architecture and its legends into her novel, adding an authentic touch to her fantasy world.

For those familiar with Wales, it may come as no surprise that the mystical Welsh legends have also inspired Richards’ writing. “Growing up, I was captivated by the tales of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake. These stories have been a part of Welsh folklore for centuries, and they have always held a special place in my heart,” she shared. The author has cleverly woven these legends into her narrative, bringing a sense of familiarity and nostalgia to her readers.

Apart from the natural landscapes and mythical tales, the people of Wales have also played a significant role in shaping Richards’ writing. “Welsh people are known for their warmth and hospitality. I have been fortunate enough to grow up in a close-knit community where storytelling is a way of life,” she said. “The people I’ve met and the stories I’ve heard have all influenced my writing in some way.”

With her novel gaining widespread recognition, Richards hopes that her readers will be inspired to explore Wales and its rich history for themselves. “Wales is a treasure trove of inspiration for writers and artists alike. I hope that my book encourages people to discover the magic of this beautiful country,” she said.

“Echoes of the Kingdom” is not only a journey into a fantastical world, but it is also a love letter to Wales and its people. Through her writing, Megan Richards has proven that sometimes, the most incredible stories are born from the places we call home. As readers delve into the pages of her novel, they will find a piece of Wales that will stay with them long after the story ends.
